A federal budget deal approved by Congress and President Donald Trump that calls for an extra $80 billion in defense spending over the next eight months and another $85 billion increase in 2019 may bring a boost to Hampton Roads.
But it’s too soon to see how the region might benefit, said Craig Quigley, executive director of the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance.
“There isn’t anybody today that can tell you with any specificity how that $80 billion is going to be spent. But it just makes sense that some of that will be beneficial to Hampton Roads,” Quigley said Friday. “Is it going to be advance procurement for another carrier? Advance procurement of a submarine? A ‘plus up’ in ship repairs? A ‘plus up’ in infrastructure maintenance?”
